Every Step Matters: A Practical Look at Medical Device Reprocessing in Community Settings

Public Health Ontario continues to support public health units and health care partners responding to a growing number of infection prevention and control (IPAC) lapses, many of which stem from improper equipment reprocessing. This full-day workshop provides foundational and practical training on reprocessing principles in community settings that perform sterilization, using interactive discussions, solution-sharing across public health units, hands-on activities, and real-world examples to help participants identify common challenges, assess risks, and support corrective actions aligned with best practices.

Individuals working in public health or regulatory colleges who inspect personal service settings or clinical offices operated by regulated health professionals.

From Sequencing to Surveillance: Interpreting Genomic Data for Public Health

Genomics is increasingly embedded in routine public health and clinical practice for infectious diseases in Ontario, with Public Health Ontario integrating genomic, laboratory, and epidemiological data through genomic epidemiology to inform outbreak response, antimicrobial resistance detection, and transmission analysis. This workshop introduces participants to using genomic epidemiology to support Ontario’s disease surveillance system. Participants will build skills in evaluating and interpreting genome-based data—such as phylogenetic trees, AMR predictions, and surveillance and outbreak reports—to support their public health practice and clinical decision-making.

Explore practices for embedding and implementing decolonial approaches within public health organizations. This workshop will emphasize community-centered, decolonial strategies and co-creation approaches. Participants will have an opportunity to practice critical reflexivity and to engage in assembling pragmatic strategies to decolonize their practice.

Public health professionals interested in advancing equity and decolonial practice, including those working with Black and/or Indigenous communities; policy makers and decision-makers; and public health leaders seeking to embed community-centered approaches within organizations.

This event offers a valuable opportunity to connect with peers and professionals, build relationships, and explore learning and career pathways in a welcoming and engaging setting. TOPHC's 2026 Regional Student Networking & Career Panel

Session Description:
Connect with professionals working across Ontario’s public health sector at this student-focused networking event. The session will include a panel featuring public health practitioners and career specialists, followed by an opportunity to network, ask questions, and explore career pathways. Open to higher education students and trainees interested in or pursuing public health.

Participant agendas and workshop materials will be shared in advance of the live day. Participants are encouraged to refer to these materials to gain insights into the anticipated flow of the workshop and details regarding specific segments of the program.
Workshop room locations will be provided closer to the date.
When registering, please provide details for the person who should be listed on the invoice or receipt and ensure the information is accurate to facilitate the payment process.
Badge sharing is not permitted.
Paid parking is available on-site, limit to one vehicle per registration. Parking fees are included in the cost of your ticket and will not have to be paid on the day of the event. No in-and-out privileges are permitted. If you must leave the premises and return, a parking fee of $5.50 will be charged.
More parking information will be shared with registrants as the convention date approaches.
A light lunch will be provided to Workshop attendees, please include any dietary information in your registration form.
